LEAMINGTON, ON – Today, Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) thanked the Ontario government for the announcement of an increase of $50 million for Ontario’s Risk Management Program (RMP) and Self-Directed Risk Management Program (SDRM). The announcement was made today by Premier Ford and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ernie Hardeman.

“We are grateful for the government’s commitment for additional support to this program which is a useful proactive risk management tool for Ontario greenhouse farmers, says George Gilvesy, Chair of the OGVG. “On behalf of our members, thank you to both Premier Ford and Minister Hardeman.”

“This is another meaningful investment into the Ontario greenhouse vegetable sector, and it could not come at a better time,” said Joseph Sbrocchi, General Manager of OGVG. “Our sector is going through a number of challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and it is critical for our members to know that they have a solid and supportive partnership in the provincial government.”

“OGVG through its partners, the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers (OFVGA) and the Canadian Horticulture Council (CHC), has been working to advocate for enhancements to the national business risk management suite of programs”, said Justine Taylor, Science and Government Relations Manager with OGVG. “We want the provincial government to know that they have a committed partner in OGVG,” she added.

Ontario’s SDRM program helps Ontario’s fruit and vegetable producers proactively manage risks beyond their control, like fluctuating costs and market prices.
