Consumer Tips For Tomato Care
Never store tomatoes in the refrigerator. Storing tomatoes in the refrigerator can ruin their texture and flavour.
Leave tomatoes on-the-vine intact until just before use. This helps maintain their freshness and allows them to fully ripen.
Wash produce right before eating. All produce should always be washed, but it is important to not to wash produce too early. As moisture sits on the produce it can cause decay.
Select tomatoes that are round, full, feel heavy for their size, and that are free from bruises and blemishes. The skin should be taut and not shrivelled.
Tomatoes are a good source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that has been clinically proven to reduce the harmful effects of UV rays as well as reducing the risk of some cancers.
Tomatoes are also an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, dietary fibre, folate, magnesium and potassium.
Troubleshooting Tips for Retail Care
Tomatoes around room temperature; ideally around 60°– 65°F or 15.6-18.3°C with optimum humidity of 85– 90%. Tomatoes have a storage life of 7–10 days. Tomatoes are ethylene sensitive.
Tomatoes should not be misted as moisture accumulation can promote decay. To avoid this, store containers off the floor to prevent dampness and maintain moderate air circulation.
Don’t stack tomatoes. Dumping or stacking tomatoes in bins can cause them to bruise and spoil quickly. To promote shelf life, handle tomatoes with care. A single layer of tomatoes is the best option.
Uneven Colour Development
This is an indication of exposure to high temperatures.
Softening or Failure to Ripen
This is an indication of chill injury. Leave TOVs on their vine. TOVs continue to ripen as long as they are still attached to the vine.
